Today it was announced that LA Unified has reached a deal between the board and the union. A deal that seems to be a win for teachers. That’s good news, especially given recent laws that have reduced the power of organized labor.
I’m not a huge fan of unions (despite being a union member). I love what they represent – the collective efforts of working people to ensure respect and dignity for all. I don’t love the culture that unions often (and, surely, unintentionally) help to develop in an organization.
But I like to see people stand up for what matters. I like to see people with little apparent power take on those with more apparent power. I like, as Seth says, to see good people, in service to others, take the action that many see as risky but which, in reality, is quite the opposite.
Bold moves. I’d like to think I’d do the same.
